A wide range of homes are available on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

 

Those choosing to live in the Sosúa/Cabarete areas appreciate the options available to them, which can differ greatly, but all within the same price range.

 

Many choose beachfront developments and homes in beachside communities  with semi private beach close by, which can start from as little as $160,000 for a 3 bedroom home with pool and a quarter of an acre of landscaped garden.

 

Houses more often than not tend to be the open plan one storey build with large covered terraces opening out from the living areas and master suite. Lot sizes are usually no less than 800m2, usually much more.

 

These well-built homes are constructed with concrete walls and roofing. For those worrying about hurricanes in their Caribbean home, this is not an issue we have to deal with on the north coast, with a mountain range offering protection against this natural phenomenon.

 

There is one coastal road which runs the length of the north coast and homes are located either side. The homes on the south side and away from the beach are still only a few minutes drive from the beach itself, even though we tend to call them hillside homes as the land inclines steeply uphill. On these areas, the homes tend to have panoramic views and, importantly, constant breezes from the trade winds. Land parcels are upwards of a quarter of an acre and homes can be both regular sized or much larger.

 

Villas tend to be built to take in the view from the north, which is toward the ocean. Quite often there is either staff accommodation or a guest casita in the larger homes.

 

Prices in these areas can be from $100,000 all the way up to $5,000,000, in either gated or non-gated environments.

 

Even living in the ‘hillside communities’ does not mean you are more than ten minutes maximum from a beach or the towns of Sosúa or Cabarete. International schools, hospital, and large supermarkets are close by or on the coastal road.

 

Most homes are built in the stretch between Cabarete and Sosúa, which is only a fifteen minutes drive from the international airport of Puerto Plata, and the towns are ten minutes apart.

 

Whether for vacation or retirement, this is by far the most popular part of the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
